Iranske styrker trængt ind i Irak

Fra Time:

The soldiers who were there still talk about the September 7 firefight on the Iran-Iraq border in whispers. ..

A short Army press release issued on the day of the skirmish offered the following information: U.S. soldiers from the 5th Squadron 73rd Cavalry 82nd Airborne were accompanying Iraqi forces on a routine joint patrol along the border with Iran, about 75 miles east of Baghdad, when they spotted two Iranian soldiers retreating from Iraqi territory back into Iran. A moment later, U.S. and Iraqi forces came upon a third Iranian soldier on the Iraqi side of the border, who stood his ground. As U.S. and Iraqi soldiers approached the Iranian officer and began speaking with him, a platoon of Iranian soldiers appeared and moved to surround the coalition patrol, taking up positions on high ground. At that point, according to the Army’s statement, the Iranian captain told the U.S. and Iraqi soldiers that if they tried to leave they would be fired on. Fearing abduction by the Iranians, U.S. troops moved to go anyway, and fighting broke out. Army officials say the Iranian troops fired first with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades, and that U.S. troops fell further back into Iraqi territory, while four Iraqi army soldiers, one interpreter and one Iraqi border guard remained in the hands of the Iranians.

The official release says there were no casualties among the Americans, and makes no mention of any on the Iranian side. U.S. soldiers present at the firefight, however, tell TIME that American forces killed at least one Iranian soldier who had been aiming a rocket-propelled grenade at their convoy of Humvees.

The dispatching of a Patriot missile battery, capable of defending against shorter-range ballistic missile attacks, appeared linked to Bush’s announcement Wednesday that he ordered an aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East, which would be in easy reach of Iran, whose nuclear program is a U.S. concern.

Navy officials said the carrier heading to the Gulf region is the USS John C. Stennis, which previously had been in line to deploy to the Pacific. It was not clear Thursday how the Pentagon intended to compensate in the Pacific for the absence of the Stennis in that region, where a chief worry is North Korea.

Iran is blaming the US and Israel for its decision to withhold information from the outside world on its nuclear program, saying in a confidential letter that threats from the two “warmongers” led it to curtail cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The IAEA – the UN nuclear monitor – in turn told Iran that it is defying the 35-nation board of the agency with its move and urged it to reverse its decision. Both the Iranian document and the confidential IAEA response were made available to The Associated Press on Friday.

The exchange reflected heightened tension between Iran and the Vienna-based IAEA arising from Teheran’s refusal to heed the UN Security Council and freeze uranium enrichment and the council’s decision earlier this week to pass a second resolution increasing sanctions in response to the Islamic republic’s nuclear defiance. A decision by the IAEA board to refer Iran to the council last year led to that UN body’s involvement in trying to curb Teheran’s nuclear defiance

The agency also is waiting for Teheran to respond to its requests and allow it to install remote cameras at key locations at Iran’s underground enrichment plant at Natanz.

No enrichment is yet taking place at Natanz. But diplomats accredited to the IAEA said Friday that Teheran may start doing so within days. If so, those cameras are crucial for IAEA experts in their efforts to monitor possible attempts to reconfigure machinery there into making weapons grade uranium – used in the fissile core of nuclear warheads.

Iran insists it wants to enrich only to low-levels, suitable for generating nuclear power. But the international community increasingly fears that Teheran may want to develop enrichment for weapons uses.

Its resistance to having the cameras mounted in locations the agency has specified is further raising concerns.

A diplomat accredited to the agency said the centrifuges are in the lowest level of the three-tiered Natanz facility and are blocked from view by a wall. The agency has only been able to mount cameras outside that wall, he said, demanding anonymity because his information was confidential.

The agency’s request for extra cameras was made by Olli Heinonen, the IAEA deputy director general of the Iran file.

It was unclear whether Heinonen’s move was prompted by concerns that Iran was approaching the limit of 500 centrifuges assembled in series – a number that the IAEA considers the red line as far as additional monitoring is concerned.

Two diplomats on Friday said that Iran had already linked up more than 900 of the devices and was ready to introduce uranium gas in them, starting the process of enrichment on a larger scale than previous attempts.

A third said negotiations over the IAEA request for additional cameras were scheduled for the weekend between senior Iranian and agency officials.

The story is roughly this. In February, Asgari traveled from Syria to Turkey, where he checked into a hotel before apparently going underground. According to Turkey’s foreign minister, Abdullah Gul, the Iranian authorities informed the Turks 10 days after Asgari’s arrival that they had lost contact with him. The Iranians were said to have initially refused to divulge Asgari’s identity, or even provide a photograph. This compelled Gul to defend the Turkish reaction by saying: “If we don’t receive information on a specific individual, then this individual can circulate in complete freedom in Turkey.” ..

Citing a U.S. official, the Washington Post reported on March 8 that Asgari was “cooperating with Western intelligence agencies, providing information on Hezbollah and Iran’s ties to the organization.” The paper did not specify who was interrogating him.

Another American official cited by the Post denied an Israeli news story that Asgari was in the United States, before suggesting that his “disappearance was voluntary and orchestrated by the Israelis.” ..

Last weekend, London’s Sunday Times hardened the mystery a bit further. The author, Israeli reporter Uzi Mahnaimi, quoted unidentified Iranian sources as saying that Asgari “had been spying on Iran since 2003 when he was recruited on an overseas business trip.” Mahnaimi threw in some Ian Fleming by pointing out that Asgari had fled in a “daring getaway via Damascus … organized by western intelligence agencies after it became clear that his cover was about to be blown. Iran’s notorious secret service, the Vavak, is believed to have suspected that he was a high-level mole.” According to the Sunday Times, Asgari was at a NATO base in Germany being debriefed. “He probably was working for Mossad but believed he was working for a European intelligence agency,” an Israeli defense source was quoted as saying. Mahnaimi added that there was “some evidence that the Mossad station in Istanbul was involved in shadowing Asgari after he arrived in Turkey.”

An essential question is what Asgari took with him. The London-based Saudi daily Al-Sharq al-Awsat claimed on March 9 that Asgari had left Turkey on a new passport, under an assumed name, in cooperation with “Western parties.” (English summary here) He allegedly carried off “military and intelligence maps and documents on the Iranian military establishment, and on relations between the Revolutionary Guards and Hezbollah, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the Mehdi Army, and the Badr Organization.” ..

Asgari may not be alone. In a story in Israel’s Yedioth Aharonot last weekend, journalist Robin Bergman quoted a British intelligence official as saying that Iran’s Consul General in Dubai, who was described as a Revolutionary Guards officer, had defected to British Intelligence. The source suggested the officer was providing information on Iranian activities in the Gulf. And yesterday, Al-Sharq al-Awsat affirmed that three weeks ago the Iranians lost contact with Colonel Amir Muhammad Shirazi, an officer in the Quds unit of the Revolutionary Guards stationed in Iraq. (English summary here.) ..

The plot thickens, but where does it lead? Assuming a defection, Asgari’s importance seems to be that he was the effective head of the Revolutionary Guards in Lebanon sometime in the 1980s. A former Mossad officer, Rami Igra, was quoted by the Washington Post as saying that “Asgari spent much of the 1980s and 1990s overseeing Iran’s efforts to support, finance, arm and train Hezbollah.”

Dertil kommer efterretninger om, at Iran for nylig henrettede en oberst i sit militære efterretningsvæsen for at samarbejde med USA (Fra Ynetnews):

Al-Sharq al-Awsat reported that a Tehran military court sentenced to death a colonel in Iranian military intelligence who recently returned from service in Iraq. The officer was accused of collaborating with American forces and providing them with details on the deployment and activities of the al-Quds unit and Iranian military intelligence operatives. He was also accused of providing the Americans with classified documents, photographs and maps related to Iran’s nuclear program and armed forces.

Although the Iranians have assured Britain that the 15 are unharmed, there are fears they could be subjected to the same abuse suffered by eight British sailors and marines held in similar circumstances three years ago.

A former marine recalled yesterday the harsh treatment he suffered when held captive for three days in 2004.

Asked to detail the conditions endured by the six marines and two navy men seized in 2004, Scott Fallon told BBC radio: “Mock executions, really. We were put in a ditch and there were Iranians on top with AK-47s, cocking weapons.”

Another captive in 2004 described his fear at a mock execution. Navy reservist Chris Adams said: “We were told to stand and put our hands on our head. We were standing in the desert. We were told to turn to the left and put our left hand on the shoulder of the person next to you. We walked slowly down a hill into a ditch.

“I thought, ‘This is a grave. This is it.’ They were filming it with TV cameras, some sort of propaganda video or something.”

McKinseys rapport kan findes her.

Following a recommendation of a majority on Human Rights Council, the open examination of the human rights situation in Iran and Uzbekistan is brought to an end. Human Rights Watch protests the move, accusing the UN of legitimising the increasing human rights violations in the two countries.

Geneva (AsiaNews/Agencies) – The United Nations Human Rights Council has decided to drop its examination of human rights violations in Iran and Uzbekistan. The step followed a recommendation by most of the five states overseeing the special procedure against Iran and Uzbekistan, which are suspected of violating the human rights of their respective populations.

Council president Luis Alfonso de Alba said the 47-member council has decided "not to continue the examination of the situation" in the two countries, but gave no further details.

Diplomats said the recommendation to drop the probe was headed by Azerbaijan, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, whilst Argentina and France wanted to pursue it.

Se den her.

Fadel Kawash, head of the Palestinian Water Authority, told AP several sewage projects, including one in the village, had been halted after international funding dried up in the wake of the election victory of Hamas in January last year.

“We had a project to treat sewage in north Gaza, it was worked on for two years,” he said.

“We built a pressure pipeline and pumping station but it was stopped after… troubles began.”

Hamas also blamed the flood on the withdrawal of foreign aid.

But Stuart Shepherd, the UN’s humanitarian aid officer in Gaza, said the Umm al-Naser plant had not been affected by the aid boycott, noting there had long been warnings about the plant.
A UN report in 2004 had warned that the sewage facility was at its maximum capacity, and flooding was inevitable unless a new waste treatment plant was constructed.

Mr Shepherd said foreign investment had been secured to build the treatment plant, but construction had not gone ahead because of security risks in the area.

A Palestinian from the Gaza Strip who worked as a metal merchant at the Karni crossing between Israel and the Strip was arrested by the Shin Bet last month for allegedly selling pipes he bought in Israel to terrorist groups that used them to manufacture Kassams, it was released for publication on Sunday.

On February 9, the Shin Bet arrested Amar Azk, 37. During his interrogation, he confessed selling the pipes to Hamas and other terrorist organizations that manufactured Kassam rockets, fired almost daily at Israel. The Shin Bet said Azk’s activities began with the start of the second intifada in 2000 and were only brought to a halt by his arrest. The agency could not say how much metal Azk traded, except that it was “significant.”

The pipes that were sold to Zak were intended for the construction of a sewage system in Gaza.

A study in Sweden, arguably one of the most egalitarian countries in the world, discovered that men and women who are equal are more likely to suffer illness or disability.

Those who earn the same are also more likely to become unwell or suffer a disability.

People who have management jobs, male or female, were also found to die younger than those with a less pressured lifestyle.

Scientists looked at both public and private sector workers. They used nine indicators of equality, including the proportion of men and women in management jobs and average income.

These were related to local figures for life expectancy, disability and absence from work through ill health. The study compared data from all of Sweden’s 290 municipalities.

“The danger is that the data will be interpreted as a warning against shaking up divisions of labour,” she said.

“In fact, what Sweden needs is complete gender equality with, for example, men entering the private sphere to the extent that women have entered the public.”

Dagen forinden kunne man i Berlingske Tidende læse at pædagogerne vil have forberedelsestid. Tidlig aprilsnar, monstro.

Citatet taler for sig selv.

In another regional case, the judges had to decide whether a class excursion was mandatory for a Muslim girl. In their ruling of 2002, they parroted the language of a fatwa issued two years previously. The former chairman of the Islamic Religious Community in Hesse had stipulated that a Muslim woman not accompanied by a mahram, a male blood relative, must not stray more than 50 miles from her home – because this is the distance a caravan of camels can travel in 24 hours.

Camels are something of an anomaly on the German autobahn these days. Sympathetic judges nonetheless recommended sending the 15-year-old brother along as a mahram. Given her fear of losing her headscarf or violating other religious laws, the schoolgirl’s condition, they argued, was comparable to that of a “partially mentally handicapped person.” She therefore needed somebody to accompany her; otherwise, she should not be forced to take part in the trip, they reasoned.

    • Onsdag 14. marts: venstreradikale dræber 14 i Indien
    • Torsdag 15. marts: venstreradikale dræber 55 i Indien
    • Lørdag 17. marts: venstreradikale dræber 5 i Colombia
    • Onsdag 21. marts: venstreradikale dræber 50 i Nepal

Non Muslim subjects must pay a contribution to the jihad if they wish to be allowed to live and practise their faith in Iraq”. These orders are being imposed on the Christians of Mosul and Baghdad by Islamic militias.  Besides these threats of extortion, thousands of non Muslims are also being forced to leave their homes by letters assigning their house to Muslim citizens.  The initiative is part of the general campaign to Islamafy the entire country, which begun with the imposition of the veil on all women.
